Bucs Men’s Soccer Defeats La Sierra 2-1

(Riverside, CA)  The Park University Gilbert (1-2-0) men’s soccer team left Riverside, California with their first win of the 2024 regular season, defeating La Sierra University (2-1-1) in a close 2-1 match.

The Buccaneers played with fundamental and disciplined play throughout, with the defensive side of the pitch winning the first half performance. The Golden Eagles took 15 shots with seven on goal, and junior goalkeeper Zac Stephenson recorded six saves on the night.

Buccaneers defensemen and freshman Noah Yalu scored the first goal of the match in the 46th minute. La Sierra then tied it up with a goal from defensemen Robert Carroll in the 76th minute, with an assist from Issac Pineda.

In the final minutes of what turned into a contested second half, senior midfielder Konstantin Papanikolaou netted the match sealing goal to put the Buccaneers up 2-1 in the 84th minute.

Park-Gilbert’s offense only took four shots, with three on goal. The Bucs capitalized on their offensive chances, converting two of them into the goals they needed to come away with the win.

The Buccaneers (1-2-0) hit the road again in a quick turnaround to play Soka University of America Lions (1-3-0) in Aliso Viejo, California on Sept. 7th at 7:00 p.m. MST.
