(Phoenix, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (5-5, 2-1 in ACCAC) picked up an ACCAC conference road win on Friday at South Mountain Community College (2-9, 0-3).
The Aztecs broke the 1-1 tie by winning the final two sets and beating the Cougars in four sets (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23).
The Aztecs took the lead in the match after rallying from a 17-15 deficit to close out the first set going on a 10-4 run. Sophomore Jasmin Joseph’s (Tanque Verde HS) ace and sophomore Haylee Gilleland’s (Flagstaff HS) kill were Pima’s final points to put them up 1-0.
The Cougars took the lead at 9-7 in the second set after back-to-back aces and led by as much as seven points at 24-17. The Aztecs made it interesting scoring four straight points but dropped the set tying the match at 1-1.
The Aztecs trailed early in the third set but scored eight straight points to take a 9-4 lead. They maintained an advantage for the rest of the set as freshman Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) put down a kill to make it 23-19 and gave the Aztecs a 2-1 with an ace serve.
The Aztecs trailed 15-11 in the fourth set but scored eight of the next 10 points to snag a 19-17 advantage. The Cougars tied it at 19-19 but Gilleland’s kill on the next point gave the Aztecs the lead for good. Freshman Julia Baird had the final kill to win it. Gilleland led the way with 18 kills while McReynolds posted 16 kills. They both each had eight digs for the match.

Sophomore Kenna Simon finished with eight kills and two blocks.
Freshman Julia Weatherbie (Mountain View HS) closed it out with 42 assists, six digs and one ace while Joseph had 29 digs.
The Aztecs will be back on the road when they play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
