(Waco, TX)  Despite double-doubles from Geli Cyr and Argentina Ung, No. 14 Sun Devil Volleyball fell at No. 19 Baylor in four sets (25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17) on Friday night in the Ferrell Center.

Notable Stats

Arizona State (12-2, 1-1 Big 12) had its second loss of the season, falling to Baylor (10-3, 2-0 Big 12). Both of ASU’s losses this season have been to ranked opponents.

Senior outside hitter Geli Cyr had another strong offensive night for the Sun Devils, earning her first double-double of the year with a game-high 17 kills and 12 digs. This is the 12th double-double of her career. This was her ninth match of the year in double figures, fourth in a row.

Graduate setter Argentina Ung collected 38 assists and 10 digs for her third double-double of the year, 22nd of her career. She also had a pair of blocks.

Holding down the defense as usual, graduate libero Mary Shroll had a team-high 13 digs. This was her 15th-straight match in double figures, dating back to last season.

Redshirt-freshman setter/defensive specialist Brynn Covell notched a career-high 12 digs.

Seeing more action in the latter part of the match, graduate pin hitter Roberta Rabelo earned a new season high of nine kills.

Graduate middle blocker Claire Jeter notched a season high in aces with two to go along with her six kills and three blocks.

Junior opposite Bailey Miller led the team in blocks with four, adding five kills as well.

Set One: Baylor 25, ASU 21

The teams traded 3-0 runs to start the set, ASU getting the second to take the 4-3 lead. Baylor scored six in a row to get back the lead, 10-5, forcing a timeout from Arizona State. Jeter had two kills and a block with Miller to get three points in a row, down 14-11. With contributions across the court and two aces from Jeter, the Sun Devils scored five in a row to take the lead, 16-15, bringing a timeout from the Bears. The home team responded with a 7-1 run to take back the lead, 21-17. Baylor held on to win 25-21, giving ASU its first set loss since September 13.

Set Two: Baylor 25, ASU 22

The second frame saw the two programs trading sideouts, neither able to create separation with multiple missed serves on both sides stopping any momentum. Baylor finally broke the seal and went on a run of four to go up 12-9. A couple of Bear errors put the Sun Devils within one, 12-11, but Baylor got the sideout. With ASU’s deficit at 17-13, the visitors called a timeout and Rabelo got a kill out of the break for the sideout. With momentum sparked by an all-out save by Covell, the Sun Devils scored three-straight points to get within one, 20-19. A kill from Rabelo held off one match point, but Baylor would win 25-22 to go up 2-0 in the match.

Set Three: ASU 25, Baylor 17

After trailing early, ASU tied it up at 4-4 off of an ace from Rabelo. Miller’s kill put the Sun Devils on top at 7-6 after some back and forth, but the Bears tied it up again. A 4-0 run with Cyr serving got her team up 11-7. Baylor got within two, but a kill from Rabelo got Arizona State back up 14-10. The missed serves plagued both teams in this set, and another error from the home team made it a 17-12 lead for ASU. Cyr’s 13th kill extended the advantage to 19-13. Errors from the Bears got the Sun Devils to set point at 24-16, and a missed serve won the set for ASU at 25-17.

Set Four: Baylor 25, ASU 17

Arizona State trailed early in the fourth frame, down 8-4 after three-straight points from Baylor. The Sun Devils inched back into it, a 16th kill from Cyr making it an 11-8 deficit. At 13-8 for the home team, ASU called a timeout and Ung got a quick kill off of a setter dump to get the sideout. From there, it was all Baylor. The Sun Devils had a late 3-0 run with a kill from Rabelo to make it 23-17, but the damage had been done. The Bears won 25-17.
