(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (3-4) opened play in the Aztec Classic on Thursday against Williston State College (ND) at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs won in straight sets beating the Tetons 25-15, 25-17, 25-18. Pima has won six straight sets.
The Aztecs led 15-12 in the first set and went on to score 10 of the last 13 points. There was one tie, but the Aztecs maintained a lead throughout the first game. Freshman Julia Baird put down the final kill as the Aztecs won it by double digits.
The second set was back and forth in the early going. The Aztecs took a 10-4 advantage, but the Tetons (1-5) rallied off seven straight points to take the lead. With the Aztecs down 11-10, they scored nine of the next 11 points. It was capped off by sophomore Kenna Simon’s ace to make it 19-13. Williston scored the next two points, but the Aztecs held off the rally to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Aztecs took an early lead in the third set and never relinquished. They led 16-10 but the Tetons cut it to a two-point deficit at 16-14 forcing Pima to call timeout. The Tetons cut it to one point at 19-18 but the Aztecs got back-to-back kills from freshmen Addy Fisher (Queen Creek HS) and Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS). The Aztecs went on to score the final six points to take the match.
McReynolds had a team-high 15 kills. Fisher finished with six kills and three aces while sophomore Tameryn Koford contributed with five kills, two blocks and one ace. Baird also had five kills to go with one block.
The Aztecs host two matches on Friday as part of the Aztec Classic. They will play Treasure Valley Community College (OR) at 9:00 a.m. and close out their portion of the invitational against Highland Community College (KS) at 4:30 p.m.
