(Los Angeles, CA) The semifinal round of the Pac-12 Tournament at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Arizona State Lacrosse (9-10) fell 20-15 to No. 1 Stanford (12-4), 15 goals being a season-high allowed by the Cardinal this season. The team ended the year 9-10, and put up three more wins under head coach Taryn VanThof in her second season, after six wins in 2023.
Despite the loss, senior Defender Zoe Mazur etched her name atop the Pac-12 and ASU career record books after tallying 19 in today’s game and totaling 167 on the season and 330 in her career. The records broken after today’s performance include: Pac-12 single-game record, ASU single-game record, Pac-12 career draw control record, and Pac-12 single-season record.
Head Coach Taryn VanThof praised her team in a game they never felt out of, “I’m proud of the effort and the fight that they put in for 60 minutes.”
How it Happened
Stanford struck first with two goals, but Shannon Urey and Lydia evened the game 2-2 with their goals for the Sun Devils. The Cardinal scored another pair to lead 4-2. ASU forced a turnover, and with one second remaining on the clock Katie Haley scored to pull the Sun Devils within a goal at the end of the first frame.
Five minutes into the second quarter the Cardinal had put three goals on the board to extend their lead 7-3. Katie Haley stopped the bleeding with her second goal of the day and it was a 7-4 game. Mina Scott followed with her first goal of the day and it was a two-goal game. The teams traded goals to end the quarter, and it was a 10-6 Stanford lead at the half.
The Cardinal scored first in the third quarter after netting a free position goal. Oldknow had ASU on the board in the third, but Stanford followed with three more goals to lead 14-7. ASU scored two straight goals and it was 14-9 going into the fourth quarter.
A free position goal for Stanford opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and it was 15-9. Another Stanford before ASU. After three Cardinal goals in the frame, Sara Flobeck replaced Katie Vahle in net. Flobeck gave up a goal, but Annie Haley evened the blow with a goal of her own and it was 18-11. Urey scored again for her fourth of the day and the lead was cut to six with 4:15 left. Flobeck stopped two free position shots before allowing a natural goal with two minutes remaining. Lindsey Dean, Teagan Ng and Zoe Mazur scored in the final two minutes and the lead was shaved down to 20-15.
