The junior shot 12-under 201 to win back-to-back Thunderbird Collegiate titles
(Tempe, AZ) For third time in his career and the second time this season, junior Preston Summerhaysearned Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Week after his performance at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate, hosted by the Sun Devils in Tempe as announced by the Pac-12 Conference Tuesday afternoon.
Summerhays finished first out of 96 golfers, finishing 12-under 201 (67-66-68) to complete back-to-back individual wins at the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate. He is the third-straight Sun Devil to win the Thunderbird Collegiate (also James Leow in 2022). He also won Pac-12 Golfer of the Week on April 18, 2023, and on Sept. 12, 2023.
Summerhays victory marks the second straight year of winning the ASU Thunderbird Collegiate and makes him the first Sun Devil to do so since Jon Rahm won three straight from 2014-2016. He now sits at five tournament wins, tied for seventh on the Sun Devil tournament wins chart.
Ryggs Johnston finished 10-under 203 (68-69-66), Wenyi Ding finished 9-under 204 (69-67-68), Michael Mjaaseth finished 8-under (67-69-69) 205 and Josele Ballester finished 7-under 206 (70-69-67).
ASU now has three wins as a team this season, as it won the Cabo Collegiate in March and the CPC Invitational in October. The Sun Devils finished 28 strokes ahead of UCLA and Oklahoma State who tied at 10-under marking the largest victory margin for the Sun Devils since 2002.
ASU will return to action at Pac-12 Championships in Carefree, Ariz. at Desert Forest Golf Club April 25-27.
PRESTON UPDATE
Preston Summerhays now has four tournament wins with the 2024 and 2023 Thunderbird collegiate titles, his fall of 2023 Sahalee Players Championship title in Washington and the 2021 Eastlake co-medalist honor, which is tied for eight in the Sun Devil record book. The four wins are the third-most in the past 24 seasons. Only Jon Rahm (11 from 2012-16) and Alejandro Canizares (six from 2002-06) have won at least four tournaments since the turn of the century.
