(Tempe, AZ)  Arizona State lacrosse (4-4) got back in the win column after dominating on both sides of the ball in the 12-5 win over the Liberty Flames (3-5) at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium on Wednesday. Junior Goalkeeper Katie Vahle recorded a season-high 15 saves, and allowed the team’s fewest goals in a game this season.

Head Coach Taryn VanThof praised the team’s 60-minute effort, “We talked about competing for a full 60 minutes and offensively, our output helped us throughout that 60 in the first half. It was great to see seven different goal scorers in the first half.”

How it Happened

Arizona State opened the game with a goal from Lydia Oldknow straight out of the draw control. Liberty managed to counter that with two goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Following that, Arizona State managed to score four unanswered goals, and held on to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter. The Sun Devil goal scorers included Bella Ingrao, Berit Brookfiels, Anna Viglione, and a pair from Oldknow.

Oldknow scored the first goal of the second quarter, assisted by Ingrao, to extend the lead to four and tally her fifth hat trick of the season. Teagan Ng scored her first goal of the game to give the Sun Devils a comfortable five-goal lead. Following Ng’s goal, Shannon Ureysplit the defenders to score her first goal of the game. Additional  goals from Anna Thornton and Mina Scott put ASU up 10-2 going into the half.

Arizona State struggled to add on to their lead in the third quarter while also allowing two goals from Liberty. Though the offense could not find their rhythm from the first half, but goalie Katie Vahle contributed six saves. The Sun Devils held onto a 10-4 lead after three quarters.

After a stagnant start to begin the fourth quarter for both sides, Ng was successful on a free position shot to give ASU a 11-4 lead with 6:54 in regulation. Mina Scott added a free position goal of her own to give ASU a 12-4 lead with 5:40 remaining. The Sun Devils closed out the game on a high note beating the Flames 12-5.
