Aztecs Women’s Basketball uses 13-0 run to start the second half to pull away from South Mountain for 11th straight win

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (23-6, 18-4 in ACCAC) played its final regular season home game on Saturday against South Mountain Community College (1-26, 1-21).

The No. 11 ranked Aztecs picked up their 11th straight victory after beating the Cougars 83-47. The Aztecs matched their longest winning streak since the 2015-16 season.

Pima took a 41-29 lead at halftime but jumped out to a 13-0 run to start the third quarter to make it 54-29. They held the Cougars scoreless for the first five minutes. The Aztecs outscored the Cougars 19-8 in the third quarter and 42-18 in the second half.

The Aztecs grabbed an early 10-0 advantage in the first quarter and went on a 13-2 run in the final 4:55 to take a 25-8 lead.

Freshman Rylei Waugh scored a team-high 23 points as she went 9 for 11 from the field and 3 for 5 from three-point range. She also added seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. She went 7 for 14 from the field and 4 for 5 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Taina Lee got the start in the backcourt as she contributed with 10 points. Fellow sophomore Rayn Holton (Casteel HS) had eight points, five rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) came off the bench and finished with eight points, six rebounds and two assists as she went 4 for 5 shooting.

The women’s team honored sophomores Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS), Rayn Holton (Casteel HS), Jordan Joe and Taina Lee at halftime.

The Aztecs close out the regular season on Monday when they play at No. 15 Eastern Arizona College (Division I) in Thatcher. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. The Aztecs are tied with Mesa Community College for the No. 1 seed in the NJCAA Region I, Division II Tournament. The Thunderbirds own the tie-breaker but they have a tough task as well on Monday when they play at Cochise College in Douglas.
