(Gilbert, AZ) California Pacific Conference has announced Park University baseball player Andrew Allanson and softball pitcher Abril Nerey as Cal Pac Player and Pitcher of the Week in their respective sports for their performances during the week of March 18-24.
Allanson continues on a tear through the California Pacific Conference pitching. This past week at La Sierra in just three games he went 7-12 (.583) with three home runs and seven RBI. He had a .667 on-base percentage and a Bondsesque-like 2.084 OPS. His three home runs in the series give him nine on the season which is a new school record surpassing the eight home runs hit last year by Austin Chouinard. It also put him second on the all-time list behind Chouinard who had 17 total home runs for his career. For the season, Allanson is hitting .403 with 25 RBI in 22 games. He has a runs created metric of 34 runs this season. He leads the team in all three triple crown categories (Avg, HR, RBI) and is also tope in on-base percentage (.542), slugging percentage (.875) and OPS (1.417).
Nerey who was not available to pitch early in the season for the Bucs, seems to be finding her sea legs which led her to being one of the top pitchers in the conference a year ago. The only game which was considered for the award this week was her 10 inning winning performance against La Sierra on Sunday, March 24. After surrendering two runs on a home run in the first to the Eagles, she only allowed two more hits over the next nine innings and struck out eight as she allowed the Bucs time to tie the game and ultimately win it in the 10th inning. She followed it up today with another stellar performance even though it was not considered in the conference selection. Today, she threw a complete game two-hit shutout of the Eagles striking out three. For the series, Nerey had 16 consecutive scoreless innings only allowing four hits and striking out 11,
Both player return to action for midweek games against Arizona Christian. The baseball team takes on the Firestorm Tuesday night March 26 at 6 p.m. and the softball squad takes on ACU on Wednesday night, March 27 at 6 and 8 p.m. Both dates are at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Arizona.
