(Phoenix, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (9-6) picked up a big sweep on the road on Saturday against No. 3 ranked Phoenix College (Division II) in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Aztecs (Division I) earned two wins in Phoenix for the first time since 2015 and earned their first win over the Bears since March 3, 2018, which was a 10-9 win at the West Campus Aztec Field. The Aztecs had dropped 16 straight to Phoenix College coming into Saturday’s doubleheader.
Freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) finished the day 4 for 9 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) closed out the day going 3 for 8 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) was 4 for 7 with an RBI and two runs. Sophomore Alexis Tsosie-Hood and freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) picked up the wins on the mound in complete-game outings.
Game 1: Pima College Aztecs 9, #3 Phoenix College Bears 1
The Aztecs scored the first seven runs of the game as they took control in the early innings.
Zepeda, sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) and Tsosie-Hood hit three straight RBI doubles while Chacon hit an RBI single to cap off a four-run 1st inning.
The Aztecs tacked on two more runs in the 2nd inning when freshman Marina Price (Rincon/University HS) scored on an error and sophomore Kayla Miranda (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI single to make it 6-0.
Marx drove an RBI single in the 3rd inning to bring in freshman Alyssa Lopez (Sunnyside HS) to make it 7-0.
The Aztecs capped off their scoring in the 7th inning with two more runs. Freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) and Zepeda hit RBI singles in the inning.
Chacon finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Zepeda went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Miranda was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Price closed it out going 1 for 2 with two runs and three walks and Lopez was 1 for 3 with two runs. Zylinski-Wrobel finished 1 for 5 with an RBI and two runs. Marx went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a walk.
Tsosie-Hood pitched a complete-game, giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Pima College Aztecs 10, (3) Phoenix College Bears 5
The Aztecs halted a rally with three runs in the 7th inning to complete the sweep.
The Bears scored three unanswered runs to cut Pima’s lead to 7-5. In the 7th, Waddell hit an RBI double to score pinch runner Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS). Freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) had a sacrifice-bunt and reached on an error as Lopez scored on the play. Price also reached on an error, which brought in Noriega.
The Aztecs got on the board in the 2nd inning with three runs. Waddell scored on a fielder’s choice and freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) and Marx hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 3-0.
The Aztecs did all their damage with two outs in the 4th inning when Zylinski-Wrobel drew a bases loaded walk. Waddell reached on an error, which scored Marx, Zepeda and Zylinski-Wrobel as Pima led 7-2.
Marx finished the game 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run while Waddell helped her own cause going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Zylinski-Wrobel drew three walks with an RBI and a run. Martin was 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run and two walks. Zepeda finished 1 for 4 with a run while Chacon was 1 for 3 with a run.
Waddell picked up the win as she pitched a complete-game, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will play in their home opener next Saturday when they host Phoenix College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
