Aztecs Men’s Basketball scores 107 points for second straight game to beat Glendale CC

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (18-3, 10-3 in ACCAC) scored 107 points for the second straight game and halted an early second half run to earn its fourth straight win.

The No. 18 ranked Aztecs defeated Glendale Community College 107-73 as they led from the get-go.

The Aztecs took a 53-26 lead at halftime, but the Gauchos started off the second half on a 19-7 run forcing the Aztecs to call timeout up 60-45 with 16:39 left in the game.

The Aztecs responded with a 14-4 run to make it 74-49. Up 92-70, they closed out the game on a 15-3 run to seal it.

Pima started the game off with seven straight points (five by sophomore Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS)). Freshman Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) hit three 3-pointers to make it 21-8. Gonzales drained his first five 3-point field goal attempts.

The Gauchos cut Pima’s lead to single digits at 24-15 but the Aztecs responded with a 13-2 run capped off by sophomore Zach Williamson’s three-pointer to make it at 37-17. The Aztecs never trailed by single digits again.

Gonzales went 6 for 7 from beyond the arc and finished with a team-high 22 points to go with five rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Baker posted 15 points on 6 for 10 shooting, with six rebounds, three assists and two steals while sophomore Jaylen Alexander closed out the game with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists. He was 7 for 9 from the field.

Williamson was another starter who scored in double figures, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Pima bench scored 45 points. Freshman Wes Ball (Marana HS) went for 11 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Fellow freshman Kota Benson (Mesa HS) also scored 11 points, and also had five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Yahir Garcia (Tucson Magnet HS) was 3 for 4 from downtown as he had nine points. Sophomore Moses Demalek finished with eight points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Toate Sika (Rincon HS) grabbed seven rebounds to go with six points.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday when they host Scottsdale Community College. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
