(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (12-5, 7-3 in ACCAC) fought back after surrendering an early deficit but couldn’t overtake Arizona Western College (13-3, 9-0) on Saturday in Yuma.
The No. 14 ranked Aztecs (Division II) scored their lowest point total of the season as they fell to the Matadors 62-43.
The Aztecs scored the first points of the game but that was the only lead they’d have as the Matadors went on a 16-0 run as they outscored Pima 20-6 in the opening quarter.
The Aztecs trailed by as much as 22 points in the first minute of the third quarter at 40-18 but got more aggressive driving to the basket resulting in free throw opportunities. They went on a 10-0 run and seven of those points came from the foul line to make it 40-28. Pima outscored Arizona Western 17-9 in third quarter but were still down 44-33.
Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) scored the first points of the fourth quarter to cut it to a single digit deficit at 44-35 with 8:34 left but the Matadors scored a free throw and two points on their possessions. They maintained their double digit lead for the rest of the game.
Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) finished with a team-high 16 points on 7 for 11 shooting to go along with six rebounds.
Freshman Rylei Waugh also scored in double figures as she had 10 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block.
Hoffmeyer posted five points and eight rebounds while freshman Gabby Lopez (Bisbee HS) had six points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks.
The Aztecs were out-rebounded 51-36 for the game and finished 0 for 8 from three-point range.
The Aztecs will be back on the road next Saturday when they play at Mesa Community College. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
