Balanced Offensive Attack Leads No. 14 Water Polo To 4-0 Start

(Tempe, AZ)  No. 14 Sun Devil Water Polo (4-0) remains unbeaten after winning both games of their Sunday doubleheader at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. ASU defeated No. 18 LMU 12-7 in game one and Salem 20-5 in game two.

In game one, ASU led LMU 6-5 at halftime before pulling away in the final 16 minutes. The Sun Devils outscored the Lions 6-2 in the second half. ASU had a balanced offensive effort from Millie Quin, Lara Kiss and Luca Petovary all scoring three-goals each along with goalie Sanne Keijzer making seven saves.

In game two, the Sun Devils scored 11 goals in the first half and 9 goals in the second to defeat Salem 20-5. Millie Quinn, Luca Petovary and Sophie Shorter-Robinson each scored five goals and goalie Sanne Keijzer made three saves.

Game 1: ASU 12, LMU 7
Each side traded goals to open the game, with the Sun Devils battling throughout the first two quarters with Millie Quin scoring two of the first three goals for ASU. Luca Petovarygave ASU their first lead of the game on a breakaway with about 3 minutes left in the opening quarter.

The game become a defensive battle, but near the end of the first half, Lara Kiss’ second goal of the game gave the Sun Devils a 6-5 lead at the half. 

The Sun Devils made adjustments coming out of the break with Luca Petrovary extending ASU’s lead to 7-5 at the 6:30 mark in the third quarter and refused to let LMU get into an offensive rhythm, with Keijzer allowing nothing to get past her in the third period. ASU would hold a four goal advantage going into the fourth quarter, with goals by Jasmijn Dikmans and Alba Olivé Martí in the closing seconds.

ASU would maintain their momentum in the final period, Millie Quin continued her successful weekend with her third goal with 6:19 in regulation, and Kiss’ notched her third goal to give ASU an 11-5 lead two minutes later. Petovary scored the final goal for the Sun Devils sealing the win.



Game 2: ASU 20, Salem 5
The Sun Devils started fast against Salem, opening with a 7-1 lead led by Dikmans and Petovary scoring two goals apiece in the first quarter. Then Millie Quin wrapped up the dominant period with two goals of her own, with Sophie Shorter-Robinson adding another to lead 7-1 after the first quarter.

Both sides traded possessions, but in the better half of the quarter Shorter-Robinson earned a hat trick with back-to-back goals to lead 9-3, and Petovary added two more goals to her tally to give ASU an 11-4 lead.

Returning from the half, Zoe Frangieh added to the lead making it 12-4, then Millie Quinstayed hot on the offense, scoring her third and fourth goals of the game later in the third. Petovary then scored her fifth goal in the final period, and Shorter-Robinson added two goals in the fourth quarter to give her five for the game, sealing the win 20-5 for the Sun Devils. In total, Petovary, Quin and Shorter-Robinson each had five goals in the victory.

UP NEXT
The Sun Devils will travel to San Diego for the Triton Invitational next weekend. ASU will play two games on Friday and one game on both Saturday and Sunday. The match times and opponents are to be determined. Coverage can be seen on ASU Live Stream-2 and live stats can be found on 6-8 sports.
