(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (9-3) found itself in a battle on Friday in the second day of the Aztec Holiday Classic.
The No. 14 ranked Aztecs trailed for much of the game but made it interesting down the stretch. They fell in the end 79-75 to Eastern Wyoming College (6-9).
The Aztecs trailed 74-64 with less than 2:30 left but went on an 11-3 run to cut it to a two-point deficit at 77-75 with 11.7 seconds left. Freshman Rylei Waugh went 6 for 6 from the free throw line during the run. The Lancers hit a pair of free throws to close it out.
Freshman Kennedi Niemann hit back-to-back baskets to put the Aztecs up 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Lancers outscored the Aztecs 27-16 in the second quarter as Pima fell behind 39-34 at the break.
Eastern Wyoming started the third quarter on an 11-2 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 50-36.
Waugh went 15 for 16 from the free throw line but was 5 for 20 from the field as she finished with 25 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists and five steals.
Niemann scored 16 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds.
Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) closed out the game with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) had seven points and nine rebounds.
The Aztecs went 4 for 21 from three-point range and 20 for 34 from the free throw line. The Aztecs grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded the Lancers 52-49 for the game.
The Aztecs will close out play in the Aztec Holiday Classic on Saturday when they host South Plains College (TX) at 7:30 p.m.
