(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (2-0) played its first game as part of the Gila Monster Shootout on Thursday in Thatcher.
Freshman Rylei Waugh hit the game-winner with 5.0 seconds left as the No. 9 ranked Aztecs (Division II) defeated No. 13 South Plains College (Division I) 60-58.
The Aztecs trailed 17-14 after the first quarter but took a 33-31 lead into the locker room after outscoring the Texans 19-14 in the second quarter.
There were nine ties and 13 lead changes in the game. The Aztecs finished with 13 steals but got out-rebounded 56-43.
Waugh finished with a game-high 29 points as she went 10 for 19 from the field and 9 for 16 from the free throw line. She completed the double-double with 10 rebounds and also had four steals and three assists.
Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales Hs) finished the game with six points, eight$ rebounds and two steals while freshman Rori Hoffmeyer (Cibola HS) contributed with six points and five rebounds. Freshman Gabriella Sanchez (Tucson Magnet HS) added five points and six rebounds.
The Aztecs are back on the court for the second day of the Gila Monster Shootout on Friday when they play Howard College at 11:30 a.m.
