(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (1-0) opened the 2023-24 regular season on Saturday with a triple-digit margin win against Community Christian College.
The Aztecs defeated the Saints 158-47 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs opened the game with a 29-6 lead as they started the game 10 for 15 from the floor and 3 for 5 from three-point range. Pima shot 66 percent from the field in the first half and led 85-20 at halftime. They finished the game shooting 65 percent.
The Aztecs had nine players score in double figures led by sophomores Jaylen Alexander and Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS). Alexander posted 20 points on 8 for 13 shooting with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Baker also scored 20 points and went 6 for 9 from the field and 5 for 7 from three-point range. He also had three assists and three steals.
Freshman Gabe Oldham went 6 for 8 from the field for 15 points and seven rebounds while fellow freshman Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite HS) also netted 15 points on 6 for 10 shooting to go along with six assists and five steals.
Sophomore Tanner Poeschl (Skyline HS) added 13 points after going 5 for 7 for the game. Sophomore Yahir Garcia (Tucson Magnet HS) and freshman Kota Benson (Mesa HS) each added 11 points. Benson also had seven assists.
Sophomore Moses Demalek (Paradise Valley HS) and freshman Cooper Jones (Buena HS) each added 10 points.
The Aztecs will host the Pima Invitational from Nov. 9-11 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. They will play Wenatchee Valley College (WA) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
