(Tucson, AZ) Pima Community College women’s basketball player Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) is one of two players (along with teammate Angel Addleman) in program history to be a three-year active player for the Aztecs but she received a first in her Junior College career.
Chavez, a sophomore guard, was named Second Team NJCAA Division II All-American. She played and started in all 35 games this season averaging 13.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She helped lead the Aztecs to the NJCAA Region I, Division II Championship, and a berth into the NJCAA Division II National Tournament as the No. 7 seed.
Chavez was a three-time All-ACCAC and All-Region recipient. She was chosen second team All-Conference and first team All-Region I, Division II. She was named third team All-ACCAC the previous two seasons.
In 16 seasons at the helm, women’s basketball coach Todd Holthaus has produced NJCAA All-Americans in 13 of those seasons. The Aztecs have an NJCAA All-American in six of the last seven years.
Chavez joins Jessie Ingraham (2008), Tia Morrison (2009, 2010), Abyee Maracigan (2009, 2010), Deanna Daniels (2011), A’jha Edwards (2013), Raja Moreno-Ross (2014), Sydni Stallworth (2016, 2017), Jacqulynn Nakai (2018, 2019), Shauna Bribiescas (2019), Hallie Lawson (2020), Sierra Mich’l (2021) and Fama Thiam (2021).
Latrina Bennett was the first Aztecs women’s basketball NJCAA All-American in 1994.
The Aztecs finished the 2022-23 season at 26-9 overall and 16-6 in ACCAC.
