(Mesa, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (31-16, 27-11 in ACCAC) continues to roll as it earned an ACCAC conference sweep at Mesa Community College (23-23, 17-23) for its eighth straight win.
Sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS) broke out in the second game as she finished the day going 2 for 5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Madison Fillman-Moreno (Sabino HS) closed out the day going 3 for 6 with four RBIs and a run while Gomez went 4 for 8 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Munoz was 2 for 5 with four runs scored, two walks and two steals.
Game 1: Aztecs 7, Thunderbirds 6
The Aztecs held off a Mesa rally in the end. With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 7th inning, sophomore Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS) got a strikeout and a pop-up to end the game.
With the score tied at 6-6 and with two outs in the 6th inning, Munoz reached base after getting hit by a pitch. She stole second to get in scoring position. Gomez hit an RBI single to bring in her to put the Aztecs up for good.
The Aztecs trailed 4-2 heading to the top of the 3rd inning. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Alejandra Castro groundout but scored Gomez. Two batters later, Fillman-Moreno (Sabino HS) hit a two-run RBI single bringing in freshmen Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) and Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) to put the Aztecs up 5-4.
Pima added to their lead in the 4th inning when freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score Munoz to make it 6-4.
The Thunderbirds tied the game with two runs in the 5th inning.
Fillman-Moreno hit an RBI double in the 2nd inning as she finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Gomez hit an RBI single in the 1st inning and closed it out going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Munoz was 1 for 2 with three runs scored and a walk. Alejandra Castro went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Wendy Castro got her fifth straight win as she pitched a complete-game, giving up six runs (five earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Aztecs 10, Thunderbirds 2 (5 innings)
The Aztecs scored five runs in the 1st inning and didn’t let up as they scored two runs in each the 4thand 5th innings to help seal the run-rule win.
Pima loaded the bases with one out to set up Chacon’s RBI single to bring in Munoz. Zylinski-Wrobel hit a sacrifrice-fly RBI to plate Gomez and Tapia capped it off with a three-run homer to drive in Alejandra Castro and Chacon to give the Aztecs a 5-0 lead.
Sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) scored on an error in the 2nd inning. Fillman-Moreno continued with her hot bat as she hit a leadoff home run in the 4th. Zepeda scored Fillman-Moreno with her RBI single to make it 8-1.
Tapia hit her second bomb of the day after smashing a two-run homer to left field and scoring pinch runner Jazlyn Felix (Willcox HS).
Tapia finished the game 2 for 3 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Casadei went 2 for 2 with two runs scored while Fillman-Moreno was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Chacon finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run.
Tsosie-Hood picked up the win (7-3) in the circle as she pitched all five innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks.

The Aztecs finished the road trip with an 8-0 record and are back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
