The Park University Gilbert men’s and women’s track and field teams participated in day one of the Willie Williams Classic hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz. on Friday. This meet posed a solid challenge to the nine men and nine women who made the sojourn down I-10 to go against top flight Division I teams.
The Buccaneers are using this meet to continue to improve and prepare against top shelf competition as they get ready for the California Pacific Conference Championships in a month.
The Willie Williams Classic is one of the most revered meets in the country and has been around for decades. It features both high school and college competitions.
Today, the women took center stage in the field events as Johanna Jessop and Nardia Padillatook to the air in the long jump. Jessop had the top distance for the Bucs with mark to 14-11 ½. Padilla’s top distance was 14-8 ¾.
On the track, Zhanna Edwards and Padilla ran in the 200-meter dash with Edwards finishing in 26.86 and Padilla in 26.90. Jordyn Espinoza, Jaiden Canady and Jessop posted times of 27.88, 28.17 and 30.16 respectively.
In the 1500-meters, Maryan Sharif posted a time of 5:23.60, while Madison Turner traversed the distance in 5:41.63.
On the men’s side, the field events will take place on Saturday, while in the 200-meters, Dylan Hukill finished with a time of 22.78, while Bridger Mageath ran 23.18 and Isaac Young 24.37.
In the 1500-meters Manuel Najera had the best time at 4:16.98, while Trevor Snedeker came home in 4:23.37 and Noah Fleming finished with a time of 4:41.71.
Tomorrow will feature the men’s shot put in the field events for the Buccaneers, while on the oval, the 100, 400, 800 and 1600 will all be on tap for both the men and women.
