Sun Devil starter Ross Dunn had a phenomenal outing where he went 6 innings only allowing 2 hits, 2 walks and 1 run with 8 strikeouts for ASU’s first quality start of the season.
Willie Cano and Ryan Campos each recorded three hits and Will Rogers added two hits and two RBIs, scoring two runs – including one where he forced the pitcher to balk while fake stealing from third.
The Sun Devils broke a 5-game losing streak and returned back to .500 with a 7-7 record. ASU will look ahead to game two of this three-game series with the Aggies tomorrow at 6:30 MST at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
THE TURNING POINT
The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 2-0 game in the first with an RBI single from Luke Hilland an RBI groundout from Jacob Tobias. The two runs scored early was enough to be victorious tonight.
THE BIG MOMENT
The Sun Devils scored four runs on 6 hits in the third inning which blew the game wide open for the Sun Devils. Will Rogers, Willie Cano and Wyatt Crenshaw recorded all of the RBI’s in that inning.
THE FINAL STRAW
A dynamic 1-2 punch from Blake Pivaroff and Josh Hansell out of the bullpen put the Aggies away. They combined for 3 innings pitched with 2 hits, 1 walk no runs allowed with 4 strikeouts.
INNING BY INNING
First Inning
In the top half of the first, UC Davis Aggies walked to have the leadoff man aboard, however a flyout as well as a strikeout/throw out quickly ended the inning. The game was tied 0-0 heading into the bottom half.
The Sun Devils got off to a hot start in the bottom half. Wyatt Crenshaw roped a single to left field then immediately stole second the next pitch. Luke Hill brought home Crenshaw in the ensuing at-bat via a single to give the Sun Devils the early 1-0 lead. Ryan Campos’ single put the Sun Devils on the corners. Jacob Tobias brought home the second Sun Devil run of the inning with an RBI groundout to first. A groundout ended the inning. The Sun Devils led 2-0.
Second Inning
A 1-2-3 inning sat the Aggies down in order. The Sun Devils still led 2-0.
In the bottom half, the Sun Devils quickly had runners aboard with back-to-back singles from Willie Cano and Nu’u Contrades. A one out flyout put runners at the corners with two outs, but could not bring any home. The Sun Devils still led 2-0.
Third Inning
In the top of the third, a couple of singles and a walk quickly loaded the bases for the Aggies with one out. A sac-fly would bring home the Aggies first run of the game. The Aggies could not bring home any more runs and the threat ended. The Sun Devils still led 2-1.
In the bottom half, the Sun Devils quickly loaded the bases with three singles in a row. A fourth single from Will Rogers brought home two runs and extended the Sun Devils lead to 3. Willie Cano joined in the singles party with one of his own which was good enough for another RBI to extend the lead to 4. Nu’u Contrades was hit-by-pitch which loaded the bases again. Wyatt Crenshaw would hit an RBI sac-fly in the ensuing at-bat to extend the lead to 5. Another single loaded the bases, but to no avail. A total of six singles for the Sun Devils and a four run inning extended their lead to 6-1.
Fourth Inning
A 1-2-3 inning sat the Aggies down in order for the second time tonight. The Sun Devils still led 6-1.
A single from Wyatt Crenshaw started the inning for the Sun Devils, however he was thrown out trying to steal second base. The rest of the Sun Devils went down in order. The SunDevils still led 6-1.
Fifth Inning
Another 1-2-3 inning from the Aggies sat them down in order for the third time tonight. The Sun Devils still led 6-1.
In the bottom half, a leadoff single started the action, but could not get anything going after that. The Sun Devils still led 6-1.
Sixth Inning
A hit-by-pitch was the only traction for the Aggies in the sixth, a couple of groundouts and a hard flyout ended the inning. The Sun Devils still led 6-1.
Very similar in the bottom half. A Ryan Campos walk was the only action on the bases for the Sun Devils. They still led 6-1.
Seventh Inning
A leadoff double from the Aggies and hit-by-pitch had runners on first and second, but could not do anything. The Sun Devils still led 6-1.
In the bottom half, a couple of singles quickly got the action going for the Sun Devils with first and second with nobody out. A double play left a runner at third with two-outs. A balk from the Aggies pitcher brought home the runner on third and extended the Sun Devils lead to 6. A single from Nu’u Contrades had him go to second due to a throwing error, but a strikeout ended the inning. The Sun Devils extended their lead 7-1.
Eighth Inning
A 1-2-3 inning sat the Aggies down in order for the fourth time tonight. The Sun Devils still led 7-1.
In the bottom half, the Sun Devils had their first extra base hit by Ryan Campos which started the inning. A wild pitch brought him to third, but the Sun Devils could not bring him in. They still led 7-1.
Ninth Inning
A walk and a single put Aggies runners at the corners with two-outs, but a lineout ended the inning and the game. The Sun Devils won the game 7-1.
