(Irvine, CA) Sun Devil Water Polo (6-4) split Friday’s contests with a win over No. 11 Indiana and a loss to No. 2 USC after a last minute schedule change saw ASU playing their second game Friday night as opposed to Saturday morning. The low scoring 5-3 victory over the Hoosiers is the program’s 15th straight program win over IU dating back to 2008.
The second round of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational continues for the Sun Devils tomorrow, February 25 at 5:00 pm MST. ASU awaits their opponent for tomorrow, but a win tomorrow would send the team to the 9th place game on Sunday at 12:30 pm, while a loss would send them to the 11th place game at 11:15 pm.
The 5-3 win over the Hoosiers is their lowest total this season, and the fewest goals scored by the Hoosiers since being held to 3 goals against USC on March 12, 2022. Four of the five Sun Devil goals were on the man-up opportunity to finish 4/7 on power play opportunities. Juliette Dhalluin led all scorers with two goals and three steals while Tina Doherty, Emily Van Zonneveld, and Luca Petovary each netted a goal. Itzahiana Baca was lights out in the cage with 10 saves.
In the 16-4 loss against conference foe USC, Itzahiana Baca and Alexa Knutson split time in the cage, but ultimately the defense could not stop the Trojans’ offense. Goal scorers for the Sun Devils were Luca Petovary with two, and one apiece from Dhalluin and Doherty.
