(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (19-6, 12-5 in ACCAC) could not overcome an early deficit on Saturday against rival Mesa Community College (17-7, 12-5).
The No. 13 ranked Aztecs fell to the No. 8 Thunderbirds 68-57 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs fell behind when the Thunderbirds went on an 18-3 run as the Aztecs called timeout trailing 20-5 with 2:20 left in the first quarter. Pima was down 25-13 at the end of the quarter.
Sophomore Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) brought it to a single digit deficit with a three-pointer to make it 35-26 but the Thunderbirds countered with an 8-0 run to make it 43-26. Pima was behind 46-31 at halftime.
The Aztecs cut into Mesa’s lead again when sophomore Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) scored the first points of the third quarter and fellow sophomore Torrance Begay (Page HS) hit a three-pointer to make it 46-36 forcing the Thunderbirds to call timeout. Mesa responded again with an 11-0 run to make it 57-36 with 5:01 left in the quarter. The Aztecs were held scoreless for a little over six minutes as they trailed 60-41 entering the fourth. The Aztecs outscored the Thunderbirds 16-8 in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) finished the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds as she went 4 for 8 from the field. She was the only Pima player to score in double figures.
Begay, Chavez and freshman Rayn Holton (Casteel HS) each scored eight points. Addleman posted seven points, eight rebounds and three assists.
The Aztecs will play at Arizona Western College on Wednesday in an ACCAC conference contest. Tipoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
