Dominique Acosta scores 18 off the bench as Women’s Basketball trounces Chandler-Gilbert CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (22-6, 15-5 in ACCAC) led from the get-go on Wednesday against Chandler-Gilbert Community College (10-17, 6-14) at the West Campus Aztec Gym.

The No. 13 ranked Aztecs defeated the Coyotes 86-51 as they have won 11 of their last 13 games.

The Coyotes scored the first points of the second half to make it 39-26 but the Aztecs got back-to-back three-pointers from sophomores Aiona Johnson and Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS). They turned it into a 16-4 run to take a 55-30 lead. The Aztecs outscored the Coyotes 18-8 in the third quarter to take a 57-32 advantage.

The Aztecs outscored Chandler-Gilbert 29-19 in the fourth quarter and held their biggest lead at 36 points late in the game.

The Aztecs came out swinging as they started on a 10-0 run and held the Coyotes scoreless for the first 5:17 of the game. Pima held a 39-24 lead at the break.

Freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) finished with a game-high 18 points off the bench as she shot 6 for 9 from the field and was 6 for 6 from the free throw line. She also added six rebounds.

Sophomore Torrance Begay (Page HS) went 5 for 8 from the field and posted 15 points along with five assists and four rebounds.

Sophomore Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) closed it out with 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists while fellow sophomore Matehya Aberle (Holbrook HS) contributed with 10 points and five rebounds.

Johnson finished with nine points, four rebounds and four assists and Chavez had seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The Aztecs close out their regular season home schedule on Saturday when they host Central Arizona College. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
