(Lancaster, CA) The softball team at Park University Gilbert hit the road for the first time this season, facing off against the University of Antelope Valley in a non-conference doubleheader. The Buccaneers swept the Pioneers 8-4 and 8-5 during the first and second games respectively.
These wins also mark head coach Brandon Telesco‘s first two as a new member of the coaching staff. “Thrilled with the way we competed today, happy we got our first 2 wins. But never satisfied, looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead tomorrow,” said Telesco.
Game One: Bucs 8, Pioneers 4
Park opened up with a successful first inning, scoring three runs on four hits. The first four batters reached first safely as Ledemza Romero and Christina Robles singled, with Danielle Farinas walking.
A double off of the bat of Mariah Martinez allowed Romero and Robles to score the first two runs of the afternoon. Farines then stole home, putting the Bucs up by three to close out the top of the first.
Antelope Valley responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first off starting pitcher Abril Nerey. Nerey soon settled in and threw four scoreless innings to wrap up her time in the first game.
In the third inning, the Buccaneers tacked on a fourth run on a Farinas double, driving home Robles. Park truly broke the game during the sixth inning, with four runs off of three hits. The big knock was a double off the bat from Diamonique Villa, marking her first career hit as a Buccaneer.
Once again, the Pioneers responded with a run of their own following an error from Bucs catcher, Raylissa Garcia.
During the bottom of the seventh, Park had a little scare with the Pioneers scoring two after the first four hitters reached base safely. Nerey found her groove with three consecutive outs, ending the first game.
Game Two: Bucs 8, Pioneers 5
It was a tale of two games as Park put up another eight runs, with Antelope Valley trailing, this time by just three. Romero was able to score the Bucs first run, followed by Robles scoring one of her own.
Antelope Valley saw their first run in the bottom of the second inning after a handful of steals sent Hailey Yamaguchi through homebase.
Robles scored in the third following a walk from Martinez. More runs came from the Buccaneers in the fourth with Natalie Castro hitting a single and driving Gabby Romero through to home. Castro and Anissa Corrales scored following a hit from L. Romero and Robles, which closed out the top of the inning.
Park scored its last run in the fifth which put them one away from run-ruling the Pioneers. Unfortunately, Zofia Corral was thrown out at home, to end the top of the inning.
Once again, Antelope Valley made a game of it with four runs in the sixth, with help from four Buccaneer errors.
The Buccaneers will close out their week against the Pioneers with another doubleheader tomorrow Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m.and 3:00 p.m.
