(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert beach volleyball team opened their 2023 season with a doubleheader against William Carey University and Arizona Christian University. The Buccaneers took care of business during the morning matches against WCU 4-1, followed by a tough 3-2 loss to ACU.
Game 1- Park Gilbert 4, William Carey University 1
It was a back and forth battle in the No. 2 spot, with Georgia Romine-Black and Grace Bakerwinning their first set by a slim 21-17, followed by a 22-20 loss in the second. During the third set, the Bucs won a competitive round, beating WCU 15-12.
In the No. 4 position, Jasmine Urban and Brittlee Harper dominated the matches winning the first set 21-11, and the second 21-5.
Brooke Beresford and Samantha Washmuth secured the teams win following their 2-1 victory over Elaina Anderson and MK Ashburn. Closing out the matches was DeLaney Poling and Railey Druxman, who both overcame their opponents 2-1.
The No. 1’s (Annika Wallace/Megan Hicks) dropped both sets, handing the Crusaders their only win of the morning, 21-17, 23-21.
Game 2- Arizona Christian University 3, Park Gilbert 2
During the second round of matches, the Buccaneers found themselves at a loss against the Firestorm of Arizona Christian University.
Wins came from the 4’s (Jasmine Urban/Brittlee Harper) and 5’s (Railey Druxman/DeLaney Poling). These were offset by ACU’s 1,2, and 3 positions as they took down the Buccaneers and secured a 3-2 win.
Romine-Black and Baker went to three sets in the No. 2 spot, followed by a sweeping loss (21-16, 21-15) in the No. 1 spot.
Park returns to the sand tomorrow, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. against William Carey University.
