(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (10-3) closed out play in the Aztec Holiday Classic on Saturday as it finished 3-0 against NJCAA Division I programs.
The No. 12 ranked Aztecs defeated Howard College (Texas) 66-56. Pima beat Bismarck State College (North Dakota) 74-52 on Thursday and dropped Whatcom Community College (Washington) 87-51 on Friday.
With the Aztecs up 58-51, they were forced to the foul line in the final 1:21 of the game. Sophomores Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) and Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) combined to go 8 for 8; Addleman went 6 for 6 and Chavez was 2 for 2.
Up 35-33 in the third quarter, the Aztecs got a spark from Chavez as she went on a 7-0 run to give Pima some breathing room heading into the fourth quarter up 42-33.
The Aztecs got their biggest lead at 51-39 with 5:08 left in the fourth quarter after freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) converted on a three-point play.
Chavez scored a team-high 17 points and also had nine rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.
Addleman closed out the game with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. She was 6 for 6 from the foul line for the game. Pima went 15 for 17 from the stripe as a team.
Sophomore Matehya Aberle (Holbrook HS) also scored in double figures as she added 12 points on 6 for 10 shooting.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Gym and ACCAC conference play when they face off against South Mountain Community College on Wednesday at the West Campus Gym. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
