(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert men’s basketball team returned to Bell Bank Park for a match up against the Pioneers of Pacific Union College, marking it their first since entering the new year. After nine lead changes, the Buccaneers pulled through with a 79-70 win during the final few minutes of the game.
So far this season, Park has been unable to secure a win while being down at halftime. They were able to flip the script tonight as they trailed by just three before starting the final 20 minutes of the night. It all came down to turnovers as the Pioneers gave up 23 points just from ball handling. Park was no stranger to this as well, allowing a total of nine on the evening.
The beginning of the night seemed to wave in favor of the Pioneers as Park struggled to keep a consistent pace. Shemarr Parker began his run by putting up eight points in less than three minutes, boosting the Pioneers to a 16-11 lead. He went on to claim 21 points and seven rebounds.
LC Ballard scored a season high of 25 points against the Pioneers, surpassing his previous high of 19. He shot 50% from the floor, and went 6-6 behind the line. Aidan Moreno also saw success from the line, going 4-4 and putting up 12 points.
Sophomore Kobi Cason clocked in for 29 minutes against Pacific Union, producing many opportunities for his team to score. He racked in three assists and nine rebounds while helping the Buccaneers secure a comfortable nine point lead towards the end of the contest. He tied with junior guard Vincent Cooke, scoring 11 points apiece.
Davon Cobbs has made an impressive return to the squad, scoring 22 points since his return to the court against Benedictine University Mesa. He bagged 10 points and seven rebounds against the Pioneers.
Park continues Cal Pac play against California State University-Maritime on Jan. 6 in what has the potential to be their third conference win of the season. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
