(Tempe, AZ) On a rainy Sunday Morning at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo (3-1) dropped the final game of the Cross Conference Challenge to the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines, (4-0) 11-10 in overtime. The game featured six ties and two lead changes in the back-and-forth battle early Sunday.
Freshman Juliette Dhalluin was all over the pool as she led the team in goals with four on the day and tallied three steals, and won her only sprint she participated in on the day. Sophomore Stevilyn Griffin was the second Sun Devil on the day with a multi-goal performance with three of her own and a steal to tally a new career high in goals.
California native Tina Doherty helped lead the team in assists with three, including an assist to Griffin which would tie the game at 10 in the second overtime period. She was able to tally a goal to her stat line in the third period to push the Sun Devil lead to two. Ultimately, Doherty notched four points for the match which was tied for the most on the team with Dhalluin.
The defense was able to constantly get pressure on the Wolverine offense as the Sun Devils obtained their fourth straight game with at least 10 steals, ending up with a total of 13, eight more than the opposition.
Freshman goaltender Alexa Knutson got the start in the cage and notched eleven saves on the day to bring her season total to 35. Though this was not Knutson’s first career game, it was her first complete game as she played all 38 minutes.
Arizona State will return to action in its first road trip of the season by competing in the Stanford Invitational the weekend of Feb. 4-5.
