(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (8-3) produced a strong first half and carried it over as it opened the Aztec Holiday Classic on Thursday at the West Campus Gymnasium.
The No. 12 ranked Aztecs beat Bismarck State College 74-52.
The Aztecs took an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and went on a 16-6 run in the second quarter to take a 34-16 advantage. Pima led 38-23 at halftime.
The Aztecs held a 58-38 lead after the third quarter and led by as much as 23 points in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Matehya Aberle (Holbook HS) did her damage under the basket as she went 6 for 10 from the field and finished with a game-high 18 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds (six offensive).
Sophomore Torrance Begay (Page HS) went 3 for 4 from beyond the arc as she scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales HS) provided a boost off the bench as she closed out the game with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. She went 4 for 7 from the field.
Sophomore Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico HS) added nine points, seven rebounds and four assists while fellow sophomore Priscila Varela (Mesquite HS) had eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gym for the second day of the Aztec Holiday Classic on Friday when they go up against Whatcom Community College (WA) at 8:00 p.m.
