(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (10-1) returned to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Thursday as it opened play in the Aztec Holiday Classic.
The No. 18 ranked Aztecs defeated Eastern Wyoming College 111-65 as they took control with a double digit lead mid-way into the first half. Up 15-9, the Aztecs went on a 14-2 run to take a 29-11 advantage. Pima led 59-30 at halftime.
The Aztecs opened the second half outscoring the Lancers 24-6 in the first seven minutes to take an 83-36 lead.
Sophomore Cesar Saenz (Sabino HS) led the way with a game-high 19 points on 6 for 9 shooting and 4 for 6 from three-point range. He also had six rebounds and seven assists.
Sophomore Traivar Jackson scored 18 points after going 9 for 13 from the field. Freshman Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS) added 17 points along with six rebounds.
Freshman Jamison Kay (Gila Ridge HS) and sophomore Pablo Gutierrez (Sabino HS) provided sparks off the bench. Kay scored 15 points on 5 for 8 shooting and was 3 for 5 from beyond the arc. He also included five rebounds and three assists. Gutierrez was 5 for 9 from the field and posted 12 points. The Pima bench scored 46 points for the game.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Gym for the second day of the Aztec Holiday Classic on Friday when they take on Bismarck State College at 2:00 p.m.
