(Tallahassee, FL) The Pima Community College women’s cross country team closed out the 2022 season on Saturday after competing in the NJCAA Division I National Championships held at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, FL.
The Aztecs finished in 24th place out of 25 teams with a team score of 567. The Aztecs were not ranked coming into the national championship race.
Sophomore Marissa Lopez (Sahuarita HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs in the 5K race as she took 72nd place out of 181 competitors with a time of 21 minutes, 26.5 seconds.
Freshman Julia Lundberg (North Canyon HS) closed out the race in the 108th spot with a time of 22:52.9. Fellow freshman Kate Shoemaker (Heritage Academy Mesa) took 112thand crossed the finish line at 23:03.2.
Freshman Naiomi Hereim (San Tan Foothills HS) was 137th with a time of 25:03.4 and freshman Iyannah Tolliver (Sahuaro HS) finished 138th at 25:25.1.
Coach’s quote: “The women fought hard. They have put in so much work and I am proud of them,” Pima cross country coach Mark Bennett said.
The Aztecs begin the 2023 Women’s Track & Field season in January.
