(Pasadena, CA)  It was the Amanda Jonovich/Makenna Busse show as the Park University Gilbert volleyball team (15-8, 8-4) rebounded from a tough loss Thursday night against Saint Katherine to beat Providence Christian College 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21). Despite the sweep, the Sea Beggars (3-14, 1-11) played significantly better than they did against the Buccaneers in their last match in September and made the Buccaneers earn the win. Both Jonovich and Busse ended the match with double digit kills, seven more than any other player on the squad and the only two players on either team to have 10 or more putaways.

In the first set, the match stayed tight for 16 points. Tied at 8-all, the Buccaneers went on a 5-0 run on Annika Wallace‘s serve and the Buccaneers maintained at least a four-point advantage for the remainder of the set, ultimately winning by five. The Bucs posted 13 kills and hit .242 for the set.

Set number two saw the Sea Beggar keep it close as the Bucs jumped out early before 9-4 before a bad passing run allowed PCC to go on a 6-0 run to take a 10-9 lead. PCC led 15-14 before a 5-1 run put Park ahead for good en route to a 25-21 triumph. The Bucs had 10 kills in the set with only three errors, hitting .259.

Set three saw PCC and Park see-saw back and forth throughout the set, exchanging the lead eight times before the Bucs took the lead for good at 21-20. This was the start of the 5-1 run the Bucs used to close out the set. 14 kills set the tone with four errors and .278 percentage.

For the match, the Bucs out hit the Sea Beggars 37-34 in kills, with 10 service aces, 56 digs and four blocks.

Jonovich added another double-double to her school leading career total with 17 kills and 11 digs. She posted a .452 attack percentage and had three service aces. Busse had 10 kills in the middle with only one error as she hit .692. No other Buccaneer had more than three kills. Hattie Patton led the Bucs with 12 digs, while Annika Wallace (17) and Jenifer Lauer (14) combined for 31 assists, while Lauer led the team with four aces.

Park Gilbert now will face its toughest test as it takes on first-place Westcliff tomorrow after at 12 p.m. in Irvine, Calif. The Warriors beat the Bucs for the first time in their history back in September. The Buccaneers look to return the favor and finish with a winning road trip.
