GCU Softball Stadium will host conference postseason for 1st time since 2019
(Phoenix, AZ) Grand Canyon will defend its title as WAC Softball Tournament champion on its home turf while GCU baseball will stay in the Phoenix area to pursue a third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance at the WAC Baseball Tournament in Mesa.
The WAC announced dates and sites for the conference’s 2022-23 championships, featuring the return of the WAC Softball Tournament to GCU Softball Stadium. After winning the tourney this year during a 39-16 season, the Lopes will host the eight-team event in May for the first time since 2019.
The Phoenix area is a gem for diamonds, so GCU will keep its crosstown WAC Baseball Tournament trip in tact. Mesa’s Hohokam Stadium will host the tourney for the eighth consecutive time with an eight-team field at the Oakland Athletics’ spring training park.
The WAC’s contribution to March Madness remains in Las Vegas but with an expanded 12-team field. The WAC Basketball Tournaments’ first two rounds will be held at Michelob ULTRA Arena March 6-7 before moving to Orleans Arena on March 8-11 for the final three rounds.
“Vegas has become the center of the basketball universe for conference championships,” WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton said. :Not only do the Orleans and Michelob Arenas provide elite championship environments, but the city serves as a premier destination for our fans and supporters. The ‘Vegas Buzz’ during the first two weeks in March is better than anywhere else in the country.”
