(Tucson, AZ) Pima Community College men’s track & field athlete Orion Barger (Canyon del Oro HS) was selected the Chapman Automotive Aztecs Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday for the week of Feb. 14-20.
Barger, a freshman sprinter, broke two Pima Indoor school records in back-to-back weeks. He set the new 400-meter standard after taking first place with a time of 47.87 at the NAU Tune-Up Meet last Friday. His previous personal-best in the 400 was 49.12.
Barger broke the Indoor school record in the 600-meter race on Feb. 12 at the Mesa Multi’s & Indoor Invitational with a national-qualifying time of 1:19.54 (personal-record). He has raced the 600-meter twice this season and both times set a national qualifying time.
He also helped the 4×400 relay team earn a national qualifier with a time of 3:19.64. He will compete in the three events at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships on Mar. 4-5 in Pittsburg, KS.
He is majoring in Business Administration, surpassed a 3.0 GPA in the fall semester, and is continuing his academic success in the spring.
This award is open to all Pima student-athletes. It is based on their athletic achievement, leadership among the coaches and peers and service to the community.
Representatives from Pima Athletics and Chapman Automotive organize nominations and make the selections.
