(Tucson, AZ) The Tucson Sugar Skulls continue building their 2022 season roster by signing second-year defensive lineman Denzel Chukwukelu and rookie kicker Logan Justus.
DL Denzel Chukwukelu (6’4”, 300, University of Texas-El Paso) joins the Sugar Skulls for his second season in the IFL. Chukwukelu spent his rookie season last year playing in seven games for the Iowa Barnstormers, registering 18 total tackles, 10 solos, three tackles-for-loss, one sack, and a fumble recovery.
Chukwukelu played four years at UTEP compiling 93 total tackles (43 solos), 14 tackles-for-loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and two blocks. Playing defensive tackle throughout his career with the Miners, Chukwukelu earned All-Conference USA Second Team honors as a senior in 2019. A native of Rockwall, Texas, Chukwukelu attended Rockwall Heath High School.
K Logan Justus (5’10”, 183, Indiana University) joins the Sugar Skulls for his IFL rookie season. Justus is a left-footed kicker, played collegiately at Indiana, and finished his career as the Hoosiers all-time field goal percentage leader, connecting on 32 of 39 field goals (82.1%).
During his senior and junior seasons, Justus earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors, was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist and was named IU’s Most Outstanding Specialist of the Year. A native of McCordsville, Indiana, Justus was also twice named as Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.
The Sugar Skulls will play eight regular-season home games at Tucson Arena beginning in March, with the 16-game regular season running through July. The IFL playoffs will begin in late July. The 2022 IFL schedule was released last week.
