(Wichita, KS) The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (15-4) earned a statement win to begin its portion of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
The No. 4 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 9 Southwestern Illinois College 2-0 in Pool D play on Monday at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas.
Freshman Delaney Buntin (Cienega HS) found the back of the net twice on similar plays where she dribbled and scored on shots inside the box on the left side. Buntin scored in the 39thminute and again with an assist from freshman Caitlyn Maher (Catalina Foothills HS) in the 58th.
“On the first goal, it was a goal kick from Lina (Angelina Amparano) and I headed it off and it went to (Caitlyn) Maher. She played me the ball and I took it up and shot it with my left. The second goal was similar. Caitlyn had the ball and she played me through the side and I took a shot with my left and it went right behind the keeper.”
The Aztecs finished with 13 shots and sophomore Angelina Amparano (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished with seven saves. This was Pima’s 10th shutout victory of the season.
“It feels really good to come out here to play and see different teams,” Buntin added. “To get a shutout is really big because it’s our first game out here and it will help us on Wednesday to give us confidence and give us good points.”
The Aztecs close out Pool D play on Wednesday when they face off against No. 5 seeded Holmes Community College. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) (5:30 p.m. MST).
