(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s tennis team closed out the first day of competition at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Plano, TX
Sophomore Landon Strickland won his first round match in No. 5 singles play as he defeated Jonathan Rhodes from Sauk Valley Community College (Illinois) 6-2, 6-4.
The No. 2 doubles team of freshmen Anton Nazaroff (Catalina Foothills HS) and Mitchell Wilkinson (Catalina Foothills HS) beat Ty Nelson and Lawson Pearson from Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Mississippi) 6-1, 6-2.
Nazaroff fell in his No. 2 singles match against James Kaoma from Barton Community College (Kansas) 6-3, 6-0 while Wilkinson dropped his No. 4 singles match to Hector Romero from the University of South Carolina-Sumter 6-0, 6-2.
Strickland and No. 3 doubles partner, freshman Emanuel Robles-Serrano (Desert View HS), lost in their match to Ryan Christensen and Daniel Shelton from Jacksonville College (Texas) 6-2, 6-2. Robles-Serrano played a tough first set but was upended by Jack Murrie from College of Lake County (Illinois) 7-5, 6-1 in his No. 6 singles match.
Sophomore Corey Pabst fell in his No. 1 singles match to No. 6 ranked Harry Collins from Harford Community College (Maryland) 6-0, 6-0.
