(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (10-20, 10-20 in ACCAC) closed out the 2021 season on Saturday at Arizona Western College (31-16, 19-11).
Freshmen Mariah Bartlett and Isabella Escobar did their damage at the plate. Bartlett finished the day 3 for 7 with six RBIs and a run scored while Escobar was also 3 for 7 with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshmen pitchers Lorisa Martinez and Anisah Triste displayed strong outings on the mound.
Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 8, Arizona Western College Matadors 3
The Aztecs rallied in the late innings with six runs in the 6th and two runs in the 7th to take the first game.
The Aztecs were blanked for five innings and trailed 3-0 in the 6th inning. Freshman Kayla Gonzales (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a leadoff single and scored on Escobar’s 2-run home run to cut the deficit to 3-2.
With two outs and the bases loaded, freshman Bartlett stepped up and went yard with a grand slam to left field scoring pinch runner Andrica Gomez, Triste and Martinez to put the Aztecs ahead for the first time at 6-3.
Bartlett was clutch again in the 7th inning when she hit a 2-run RBI single driving in sophomore Giselle Muñoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Triste.
Bartlett finished the game 2 for 4 with six RBIs and a run scored. Escobar was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Triste went 2 for 3 with two runs. Gonzales finished 2 for 3 with a run and Muñoz went 2 for 4 with a run.
Martinez pitched a complete-game and picked up the win (3-4) after giving up three runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts on 82 pitches.

Game 2: Arizona Western College Matadors 3, Pima CC Aztecs 1
The Aztecs broke a scoreless tie in the 5th but the Matadors rallied off three runs in the 6th inning to take the lead for good.
Escobar came through again as she hit a one-out solo home run to left field to put the Aztecs ahead.
Down 3-1 in the 7th, the Aztecs got back-to-back hits from Gomez and Escobar but the next two batters recorded outs to end the game. Pima stranded eight runners on-base for the game.
Escobar finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Triste went 2 for 4 while Bartlett and Martinez each were 1 for 3.
Triste kept the Arizona Western bats silent as she recorded outs on the first 12 batters. She took the loss (5-11) as she finished pitching six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with nine strikeouts.
