(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (1-0) opened the 2020-21 season on Saturday against one of its biggest rivals in Yavapai College (1-1).
The No. 2 ranked Aztecs (Division II) scored four unanswered goals to beat the No. 7 ranked Roughriders (Division I) 4-1 in Prescott. It was Pima’s first competitive game since November 19, 2019.
Sophomore Seungeon Kim assisted in the first two goals. Sophomore Manuel Quiroz (Sunnyside HS) scored in the 5th minute. The Aztecs took the lead when sophomore Francisco Manzo (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored in the 17th minute.
Kim wasn’t finished as he scored his goal in the 28th minute.
Freshman Brian Vu (Rincon HS) added some insurance with his goal in the 32nd minute. Sophomore Zak Mohamed (Rincon HS) had the assist.
The Aztecs finished with five shots on goal. Sophomore Juan Suarez (Desert View HS) finished with three saves.
Coach’s Quote: “Yavapai was very good. It’s always good to test ourselves against one of the best teams in the nation,” Pima men’s soccer coach David Cosgrove said. “We had a great response after going down 1-0 early.
“It was fun to finally get out and play a game that matters. We’ve got lots of work to do but fun to start playing again.
“Thanks to the Pima Administration, Athletic Department, Support Staff and Yavapai College for doing such a great job helping soccer return.”
The Aztecs will host their home opener on Thursday as they return to the West Campus Aztec Soccer Field part of the Chapman Auto Sports Complex against GateWay Community College. Game is set for 4:30 p.m.
