(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (3-2) fell behind but was able to fight back on Friday in its NJCAA Division II Southwest District Tournament match-up with DC-Eastfield (10-6).
The Aztecs turned the ball over and Eastfield hit a shot with 1.9 seconds left as the Aztecs fell 101-99.
The Aztecs trailed 96-92 with 1:11 left in the game. Sophomore Joe Heath (Mohave HS) converted on a three-point play. Eastfield went 1 for 2 from the foul line and the Aztecs retook the lead at 98-97 when freshman Chris Lee drained a three-pointer.
Sophomore Daniel Moody (Walden Grove HS) had a block on the other end of the floor and Lee collected the rebound and was fouled. He made 1 of 2 foul shots to put Pima up 99-97 with 19.8 left. Eastfield made two more throws tie it at 99-99 with 5.9 seconds remaining.
The Aztecs fell behind by 22 points in the first half at 44-22 but closed out the half on a 19-8 run to make it 52-41 at the break.
The Aztecs chipped away at the deficit and were down 62-55 before they went on an 18-2 run to take a 73-64 advantage forcing Eastfield to call timeout with 10:44 left. Freshmen Marcel Dean (Cholla HS), Dylan Sullivan and Damon McDowell Jr. all contributed with baskets during that stretch. The Aztecs led by as much as 11 points at 76-65 when Lee converted on a three-point play with 10:06 remaining.
Eastfield countered with a 15-5 run of their own in the next five minutes to cut Pima’s lead to 81-80. Eastfield would take a 93-87 lead with 2:00 left before the Aztecs would close the gap again.

The Aztecs finished the season at 3-2 overall.
