Aztecs baseball runs win streak to 20 games as it sweeps Chandler-Gilbert CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (30-6, 21-5 in ACCAC) earned its 30th win of the season on Saturday and now hold a 20-game winning streak after sweeping Chandler-Gilbert Community College (13-17, 10-14) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field part of the Chapman Auto Sports Complex.

The Aztecs scored 25 runs on the day. Freshman lead-off hitter Parker Schmidt finished the day 6 for 8 with an RBI and five runs scored.

Sophomore JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) went 4 for 6 with five RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) was 3 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Bradon Zastrow threw a complete-game in the first game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 3

The Aztecs scored at least a run in each inning except for the 1st as they took control with six runs in the 5th inning.

Up 5-1, the Aztecs put the first two runners on base and sophomore Terrell Huggins (Cienega HS) hit a 2-run RBI double to score Ochoa and Rollon.

Two batters later, sophomore Bailey Seeger drove in Huggins with an RBI single. Seeger scored on an error to make it 9-2.

Freshman Daniel Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Schmidt. Freshman Alex Kelch (Tucson Magnet HS) scored on an error to make it 11-2.

Ochoa hit a 2-run RBI single in the 3rd inning bringing in Schmidt and Kelch.

Huggins had another RBI hit as he scored Ochoa to make it 4-1. Schmidt hit an RBI double in the 4th inning to score pinch runner Fernando Loera.

Huggins hit a leadoff triple in the 6th inning and scored on Seeger’s RBI single. Huggins fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle as he went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Seeger finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Ochoa went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs while Schmidt was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. Rollon went 2 for 4 with a run and Kelch scored two runs and drew a walk.

Zastrow (4-2) pitched a complete-game giving up three runs (three earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks on 102 pitches.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 8

The Aztecs started out with a 7-2 lead after the 2nd inning but the Coyotes tied the game at 7-7 in the top half of the 5th. The Aztecs responded in the bottom half of the inning.

The Aztecs loaded the bases with no outs to open the 5th. Durazo put the Aztecs ahead with a sacrifice-fly RBI that scored freshman Romeo Ballesteros (Salpointe Catholic HS), who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Ochoa drew a walk to load the bases again with two outs. Rollon drew a walk to score Schmidt to make it 9-7. Kelch scored on a wild pitch to cap off the inning.

The Aztecs got some insurance runs in the 7th. Durazo hit a solo home run to right field and two batters later, Rollon hit his solo shot to right field as well making it 12-8.

The Aztecs scored five runs in the 2nd inning. They took advantage of a couple Chandler-Gilbert errors. Durazo hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate Schmidt and Rollon capped off the inning with a 2-run RBI double to score Enriquez and Ochoa.

Rollin had a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 1st inning and finished the game 2 for 5 with five RBIs, a run scored and two walks.

Schmidt went 4 for 5 with three runs scored. Durazo was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Enriquez finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kelch was 2 for 4 with two runs and Ochoa finished 1 for 2 with an RBI, a run scored and two walks.

Freshman Darius Garcia picked up the win in relief (2-0) after he pitched four innings giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

The top two teams in the ACCAC conference will face-off on Tuesday when the Aztecs play at No. 2 ranked Central Arizona College (33-3, 23-3) in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
