(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team opened the 2020 season on Tuesday against No 16 ranked Yavapai College at the West Campus Aztec Softball field.
Game 1: (16) Yavapai College Roughriders 6, Pima CC Aztecs 2
The Aztecs struck first in the 2nd inning but the Roughriders scored six straight runs.
Freshman Anisah Triste hit a leadoff homerun to left field in the 2nd inning to put the Aztecs up 1-0.
The Roughriders responded with three runs in the 3rd inning to take the lead.
Down 6-1 in the 7th, Amaya Turner-Viacarra (Tucson HS) drew a one-out walk. Freshman Malaealani Fraser (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a single but Turner-Vizcarra was thrown out at home. Freshman Jazmine Ayala (Sunnyside HS) hit into a fielder’s choice to put two runners on. Triste followed with an RBI single to drive in Fraser. Freshman Isabella Escobar struck out to end the game.
Triste finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Fraser was 1 for 4 with a run scored. Freshman Mariah Bartlett went 0 for 1 with two walks.
Sophomore pitcher Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) took the loss (0-1) after she went three innings giving up three runs (three earned) on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Ayala pitched in relief as she went four innings giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
