(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (14-6, 8-5 in ACCAC) struggled to keep up with Eastern Arizona College on Saturday in an ACCAC conference contest.
The No. 17 ranked Aztecs fell to the Gila Monsters 86-66.
The Gila Monsters (15-6, 8-5) went on an 8-0 run late in the first quarter to take the double digit lead at 21-8. The Aztecs closed the gap to single digits at 36-28 with 1:24 in the second quarter but Eastern Arizona closed out the quarter with a 6-0 run. The Aztecs trailed 42-28 at halftime.
The Aztecs were out-rebounded 57-34 for the game and Eastern Arizona went 7 for 16 from three-point range. The Aztecs went 2 for 15 from beyond the arc.
Freshman Fama Thiam (Highland HS) was a bright spot for the Aztecs as she scored a team-high 14 points. Sophomore Marlena Arroyo-Plata (Campo Verde HS) finished with 10 points on 5 for 7 shooting while freshman Keara Felix scored 10 points off the bench. Freshman Sierra Mich’l posted seven points, five rebounds and five blocks.
The Aztecs will be on the road for the next two games. They’ll play at Arizona Western College on Wednesday in Yuma. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
