Around The 520 – Your Weekly Wrap Up Of All Things Sports In Southern Arizona

University of Arizona Women’s Basketball

The #18 Lady Cat’s, holding the longest active winning streak in the nation, hit the road for California last week. First stop on the road trip was USC. The Trojans stayed close throughout the game, but they couldn’t stop the Aari and Cate show. Aari’s 24 points and Cate’s double double secured the win.

Final Score: Arizona 65 USC 57

Arizona took their winning streak and 13-0 record down the road to #8 13-0 UCLA, setting up a top 20 showdown. The Lady Cat’s played tough for the first half, but UCLA’s experience won out as the Bruins handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season. The loss also ended the nations longest active winning streak.

Final Score: UCLA 70 Arizona 58

The #18 Wildcats return home to face #3 Oregon State on Friday, January 10th at 8pm and #2 Oregon on Sunday, January 12th at 12:00pm. This is Wildcat Nations chance to watch some spectacular women’s basketball in McKale. Get your tickets now and pack the house.

Congratulations to Aari McDonald on making the Wooden Awards top 25 list. Well deserved!

University of Arizona Men’s Basketball

Rivalry took center stage in McKale as ASU came to town to take on UofA in the Pac-12 season opener for both teams. After a season sweep of the Wildcats, the Sun Devils were looking to add win number 3 and start the Pac-12 gauntlet with a W in McKale. Arizona, looking to redeem themselves from those uncharacteristic losses to ASU last year, was ready to rumble. And rumble they did. The Wildcats dominated every aspect of the game holding ASU to 47 points. The biggest surprise of the night was the 2, yes 2, assists from ASU. After that showing, the Guard U shirts may be retired for awhile.

Final score: UofA 75 ASU 47.

The B-ball men of Zona headed out on the road to play #9 Oregon tonight at 7pm in Matthew Night Arena. The freshman led Wildcats played a strong game against an experienced Duck team taking Oregon to OT, but take the L.

Final: Oregon 74 Arizona 73.

The Wildcats take on the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday at 8pm on FS1

Pima Women’s Basketball

After a tough loss to the Thunderbirds of Mesa Community College, the Aztecs were looking to rebound against South Mountain Community College on Wednesday night. Pima, led by Hallie Lawson (double double) got back to their winning ways taking down South Mountain 57-42.

The Aztecs head home to face Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday at 2pm.

Pima Men’s Basketball

After losing a heartbreaker at the buzzer to Mesa Community College (63-62) on Saturday, Pima struggled to put away South Mountain and lost 77-73 on Wednesday. The Aztecs are looking to snap their two game losing streak when they play Chandler-Gilbert Community College Saturday at 4 pm.

Arizona Football

Times they are a changing for the Arizona Defensive Staff. After hiring Paul Rhoads to fill the Defensive Coordinator position, the Wildcats filled their Defensive Line Coach vacancy. On Monday Stan Eggen was announced as the new D Line coach. Eggen joins the Wildcats after serving as the D Line coach at The University of New Mexico from 2016-2019. Eggen has more than 40 years experience. Most of those years were spent coaching the D Line and Linebackers. Eggen coached and mentored many players that went on to play in the NFL, Von Miller and Michael Bennett being the two most recognizable names. His reputation as a top recruiter along with his years of experience should bring some much needed stability and knowledge to the position.

Welcome Coach Eggen!
