(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (4-3, 1-2 in ACCAC) could not overtake the lead in the closing minutes on Wednesday against Central Arizona College (8-1. 4-0).
The No. 9 ranked Aztecs (Division II) fell short against No. 6 Vaqueras (Division I) 74-70.
Freshman Sierra Mich’l scored a basket capitalizing on two missed free throws by Central Arizona to close it to 71-68 with 41.2 seconds left. The Vaqueras scored to make it 73-68. The Aztecs closed it again to a three-point deficit at 73-70 but the Aztecs were forced to foul as time ran out.
The Aztecs opened the first quarter on an 18-8 run and led 22-17 after the first quarter. The Vaqueras opened the second quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 30-24 advantage. The Aztecs trailed 35-25 but scored the final five points of the quarter to close it to 35-30 at the break.
Sophomore Alyssa Perez (Marana HS) finished with a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Mich’l fell short of a double-double as she posted 13 points and nine rebounds on 6 for 9 shooting. Sophomore Hallie Lawson (Campo Verde HS) added 13 points and six rebounds.
The Aztecs hit the road on Saturday as they take on Scottsdale Community College. They will tip off after the men’s game at 6:00 p.m.
