(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s and women’s track & field teams competed in the first day of the NJCAA Region I Championships on Tuesday at Mesa Community College.
Sophomore Katherine Bruno (Canyon del Oro HS) claimed two region titles on the day. She was tops in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the second straight year as she posted a time of 11 minutes, 39.82 seconds earning the Aztecs 10 team points.
Bruno, along with freshman Mary Siml, sophomore Kaylen Fox (Sahuaro HS) and freshman Iriana Sanchez (Cienega HS) won the 4×800 relay race. They set a national qualifying time of 9:42.63 and are currently ranked No. 6 in the nation.
Sophomore Hailey Myles (Boulder Creek HS) claimed the women’s long jump region championship as she finished with a mark of 18-feet, 2.25-inches (5.54 meters) giving Pima another 10 points. She took fifth in the event last year. The Aztecs have claimed the women’s long jump region title in seven of the last eight years.
Similar took second place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and set a national qualifying time of 11:56.66. Her finish gave the Aztecs eight team points.

Rainbow Hoss (Mountain View HS) – Third place in 10,000 meter race at 46 minutes, 43.66 seconds (6 pts)
Raelynn Fair (South Mountain HS) – Fifth place in long jump (17-1, 5.21 meters) (4 pts)
Quinn Williams (Canyon del Oro HS) –Seventh place in long jump (16-4, 5.01 meters) (2 pts)
Anahí ramas Lopez (Tucson HS) – Eighth place in long jump (16-3, 4.98 meters) (1 pt)
Men’s track & field finishes that earned team points:
Christian Edgerson – Second place in long jump (23-feet, 3.25-inches (personal-record) (8pts)
Tyler Valenzuela (Canyon del Oro HS) – Third place in pole vault (14-6, 4.45 meters) (6 pts)
Luis Tarazon (Desert View HS) – Sixth place in 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:03.08) (3 pts)
Luis Oviedo (Rio Rico HS) – Eighth place in 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:08.22) (1 pt)
Jaylen Coleman – Eighth place in long jump (21-5, 6.56 meters)
The final day of the Region I Championships will be on Thursday at Mesa Community College. Competition begins at 5:00 p.m.
