(Tucson, AZ) Head Coach Adía Barnes added 5’ 8” guard Amari Carter to the Wildcats roster on Friday. Carter has already graduated from Penn State University, but had a medical redshirt year from a torn ACL as a freshman. She is elegible to play immediately.
Carter will most likely will back up starting point guard Aari McDonald, but could see minutes at the shooting guard position as well.
In the Big 10 Conference she earned a Second Team selection last year and comes to Arizona with very solid statistics. Last season for the Nittany Lions, she averaged almost ten points a game (9.6) with nearly two steals a game (1.6). She’s also a good three point threat at 33% from beyond the arc.
Arizona’s needs more size and athleticism in the back court and Carter will provide the Cats with more depth than they’ve had in previous years.
The Wildcat’s along with the five freshman recruits coming in have now added Carter and Oklahoma transfer Shaina Pellington.
Pellington is 5’ 7” guard who was named the Big 12 freshman of the week an astonishing four times.
Because of the NCAA transfer rule, she must sit out this upcoming season, but will be available for the 2020-21 season.
The Wildcats are coming off their most productive season in almost a decade with an eighteen win turnaround from the previous year and the 2019 WNIT Championship.
Barnes will now have the luxury of a deep bench that she’s not had since arriving back in Tucson in 2016.
