(COLORADO SPRINGS, CO) Arizona’s single-season scoring record holder Aari McDonald is one of 36 athletes who was invited to attend the U.S. Pan American Games Women’s Basketball Team Trials, which will take place May 16-20 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
After the trials are completed and the 12 team members are selected, they will return to Colorado Springs for training camp July 23-Aug. 5, before competing in the women’s basketball tournament at the 2019 Pan American Games from Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru. Athletes eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens who currently are enrolled as a full-time collegiate student with remaining eligibility for the 2019-20 school year.
McDonald is one of seven Pac-12 student-athletes that received an invitation. She will compete alongside Ruthy Hebard from Oregon, Amber Melgoza from Washington, Michaela Onyenwere UCLA, Mikayla Pivec from Oregon State, Destiny Slocum from Oregon State and Kiana Williams from Stanford.
During her spectacular sophomore season, McDonald smashed Adia Barnes‘ single-season scoring record, amassing 890 total points for an average of 24.1 per game, which was the third-highest average in the country. She was named an All-American by the Associated Press and the WBCA while scoring the fourth-most points in a season in Pac-12 history.
She is the only Division I player since 2000 with 800 points, 200 rebounds, 150 assists and 90 steals in one season and is also joins Kelsey Plum as one of two players in Pac-12 history with 750 points and 150 assists in one season. She was a three-time Pac-12 player of the Week and was named to the All-Pac-12 team as well.
Suzy Merchant (Michigan State) will lead the team as USA head coach, with USA assistant coaches Felisha Legette-Jack (Buffalo) and Vic Schaefer (Mississippi State).
