(Marana, AZ) As Arizona heads into their third game against the University of Idaho, many see and speculate on might happen if the Wildcats win on Thursday night. The game tops off at 6:30 pm MST.
This Tournament is run much differently and by a different entity than the Men’s NIT which is headed by the NCAA.
Triple Crown Sports, a company based in Fort Collins, Colorado that specializes in the promotion of amateur sporting events, created the WNIT in 1994 as a preseason counterpart to the then-current National Women’s Invitational Tournament (NWIT). After the NWIT folded in 1996, Triple Crown Sports resurrected the postseason version in 1998 under the NWIT name, but changed the following season to the current name.
Arizona was selected as an At-Large Bid after the University of Utah declined their automatic bid invitation due to injures and lack of funding.
Since Triple Crown Sports is a for profit company, the schools that are making the most money get to continue to host games at their arenas. Currently in Arizona’s bracket, the University of Wyoming has generated more revenue because they didn’t discount tickets as the U of A has (Senior, Child, Military). The University of Arizona has had more tickets sold than Wyoming, but at a reduced cost.
Here’s the kicker, since the WNIT was revamped to it current format, every champion has had to play one road game. They can return to their home area if they continue to advance.
Arizona will most likely play in Laramie, Wyoming if the Cowgirls beat Pepperdine University. If The Lady Waves win, Arizona would most likely host Pepperdine at McKale Center on Sunday. Those are the two most likely scenarios this point.
