(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College football team (6-3, 4-2 in WSFL) closed out the regular season on Saturday at Arizona Western College (6-4, 4-3) as the Aztecs could not get the final stop with under a minute to play.
The No. 16 ranked Aztecs fell to the Matadors 24-20 dropping their final two games of the regular season.
Up 20-17, the Aztecs seemed to be in business after sophomore Macarius Blount (Mountain Pointe HS) intercepted a pass to give the Aztecs the ball back with 2:18 left. The offense went three-and-out and were forced to punt after taking just 27 seconds off the clock.
The Matadors took over at their own 42-yardline. The drive went six plays in just 1:02 and quarterback Logan Byrd scored on a 1-yard run. The Aztecs got the ball with 44 seconds left but freshman quarterback Brooks Ringers threw four straight incompletions to end turn it over on downs.
The Aztecs trailed 10-0 after the first quarter but rallied back in the second. Pima got on the board when Ringer scored on a 2-yard run with 6:10 left in the quarter. He found Larry Rembert for a 36-yard completion to set up the score. One minute later, the Aztecs took the lead after sophomore Garius Thompson intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for the score to put the Aztecs up 13-10.
The Matadors picked off Ringer and returned it 82 yards for the score to retake the lead at 17-13 with 11:31 left in the third quarter. The Aztecs responded on their next drive when Ringer threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Jon Cole to give Pima the lead back at 20-17 with 10:19 left in the third. I
